Black Economic Empowerment in America
Economic empowerment is rooted in education, opportunity and self-help. Education must include financial literacy, development of marketable skills, and knowledge about basic rights. Also essential are freedom from violence and intimidation, laws ensuring equal-opportunity employment, access to credit and finance, jobs paying adequate wages, and representation in decision-making positions. The following photos chronicle some of the historical and contemporary struggles and success stories of economic empowerment for black Americans in the United States.
Ambassador congratulates student winners of NASA competition

President Obama Delivers His First State of the Union Address
President Obama addressed the U.S. Congress and outlined the administration’s priorities for 2010, and restated his commitment to global engagement, which includes taking a leadership role in fighting climate change; working to sustain a lasting global economic recovery; establishing partnerships around the world in science, education and innovation; and providing humanitarian food and medical assistance, including in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Secretary of Defense Gates meets Prime Minister Singh
U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates met with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on January 19, 2010 during a two-day visit to India. The Secretary also met the foreign minister and defense minister and discussed issues ranging from enhanced defense cooperation to cybersecurity.
